This compilation of images, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, showcases the attribute hues of autumn in quite a few European nations.
Autumn foliage is one in every of nature’s most beautiful exhibits, turning deciduous forests into landscapes painted with vibrant colours. As temperatures cool and daylight shortens, deciduous bushes cease producing chlorophyll so that leaves flip yellow, orange and pink – the colours of autumn.
The images below, from October 2024, seize these colours all through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines in Italy, the western border of Greece and North Macedonia and the southeastern Carpathian Mountains in Romania.

The shades of brown and inexperienced seen throughout the photos depend on the species of tree, the local weather, altitude and orientation of the mountain slopes.
The most typical tree in these areas is the European beech, or Fagus Sylvatica. As confirmed throughout the map below, the European beech extends from southern Scandinavia to southern Italy and from Spain to northwestern Türkiye.
One of the best probability of European beech being present is highlighted in yellow throughout the map.
With its broad, simple leaves, which usually flip deep gold and bronze in autumn, the beech creates dense, golden-bronze canopies over areas sufficiently massive that they’re typically clearly seen from home.
